Nearly 100 people showed up to a meeting Thursday night to give input on plans for a new sports complex in Santa Maria.

The city is in the process of applying for Proposition 68 funding, which would then be used for projects in the city.. The city’s Recreation and Parks Department hopes to use the funding for what it’s calling the Santa Maria Sports Complex, as well as a new Enos Ranch Park and Cultural Center.

Those in attendance said they were interested in soccer fields, as well as football fields, and other sports areas.

They also expressed interest in creating a complex that can have multiple uses, including picnic benches, bleachers, a walking trail with equipment, storage space, restrooms, and a concession stand.

The city is still in the pre-grant phase right now but hopes to learn by April 19 if the city was invited to apply for the full grant funding.

Six to nine months after that, the city will find out if it has been approved. The city says if all goes as planned, it could break ground on the project in mid to late 2020.
