The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a homicide in Oceano.

Deputies were first called to the 2200 block of Beach Street around midnight.

“We received a call for an assault of a deadly weapon,” said Tony Cipolla, spokesperson for the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators were on scene overnight and into the afternoon Wednesday after finding a man dead inside a home. Sheriff’s officials say the man had been shot, but the official cause of death is still under investigation.

Several neighbors tell KSBY they heard multiple gunshots early in the morning.

“It’s scary, I’ve never heard of anything around here,” said Sandra Johnson, who owns a vacation home on Beach Street.

Johnson says the neighborhood is usually quiet and filled with families.

“We’ve been here for about five years off and on for vacations and we’ve never had any kinds of problems like that around here,” said Johnson. “It really surprises me.”

Many people in the area got a wake-up call from deputies in the middle of the night, as investigators combed through the area.

However, another neighbor got an even more alarming wake-up call.

“Apparently the victim knocked on a neighbor’s door and they opened it up and he told the residents inside that they have been shot and then he died shortly thereafter,” said Cipolla.

Investigators say the man who died was a resident in the neighborhood.

According to authorities, there is no concern for public safety

Some neighbors say they’re still looking into installing surveillance cameras around their homes, just as a precaution.

“It would be a good idea,” said Johnson.

This is the second homicide in Oceano this year, but investigators say the two cases appear unrelated.

Deputies say they have obtained surveillance video from neighbors that recorded the gunshot sounds, but they are still looking for a suspect.

If you have information on this case, you are encouraged to call the Sheriff’s office at 805-781-4550.

Detectives say they will release the victim’s name once next of kin is notified.
