San Luis Obispo City Fire plans to burn dozens of brush piles in and near the Irish Hills Open Space off Prefumo Canyon Road on Tuesday, Jan. 26.

Burning is scheduled to take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Firefighters say the prescribed burn will help reduce the threat and severity of wildfire in the area and aid in restoring natural ecosystem processes.

The piles contain French Broom, an invasive non-native plant that firefighters say can create a highly flammable fuel and greatly increases the fire danger.

State Parks also plans to begin pile burning on Tuesday at Montaña de Oro State Park between Pecho Valley Road and Bloody Nose Trail.

Those burns may start as early as 7 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m. and are scheduled to take place through Sunday, Feb. 7, depending on weather conditions.
