Firefighters aim to fully contain Avila Fire by Thursday night

UPDATE (6:40 p.m.) - Containment of the Avila Fire in Shell Beach grew to 75 percent on Wednesday evening.

Fire officials say better mapping shows the fire burned a total of 445 acres.

They say the fire did not grow at all on Wednesday, and full containment is expected by 6 p.m. on June 18.

(8 a.m.) - Firefighters continue efforts to contain the Avila Fire that burned 400 acres Monday and threatened hundreds of homes.

The fire broke out Monday afternoon near Avila Beach Dr. and Highway 101 in the area of Avila Beach and Shell Beach.

As of Wednesday morning, fire officials say the burn area is still 50 percent contained. Containment did not change overnight.

Some 450 firefighting personnel are currently assigned to the Avila Fire.

Crews aim to have it fully contained by 6 p.m. Thursday and will monitor the area through the weekend.

No homes were lost in the Avila Fire and no injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
