UPDATE: Overnight big rig fire near Pismo Beach will cause morning commute delays on Hwy 101 south

UPDATE (9:06 a.m.) – The SIGALERT has been canceled.


UPDATE (8 a.m.) – One lane of the highway remained blocked as of 8:45 a.m. 


 


UPDATE (6:10 a.m.) – CHP said one southbound lane remains closed on Highway 101 near Pismo Beach. There is no estimated opening time. 


UPDATE (3:15 a.m.) – A big rig fire overnight is expected to cause delays on Highway 101 southbound near Pismo Beach during the morning commute Tuesday. 

The left southbound lane remains open but drivers should allow extra time to get to their destinations. 

The Highway 101 northbound lanes are not affected by this incident. 

The big rig fire initially prompted the closure of Highway 101 in both directions when it broke out at about 12:45 a.m.

It’s unknown when the right slow lane of Highway 101 southbound will reopen.

The cause of the fire has not yet been released.

A vehicle fire near Pismo Beach has prompted the closure of Highway 101. 

As of 1:18 a.m. Tuesday morning, the southbound lane of Highway 101 near Pismo Beach was closed because of a vehicle fire in the area. The vehicle was reportedly filled with flammable liquid. 

According to CHP, a vehicle caught fire on the highway near Price street at approximately 12:42 a.m. Officers closed both sides of the highway and traffic was diverted. The fire was knocked down around 1 a.m. and the closure on the northbound side was lifted.

Officers said the southbound slow lane will be closed for an extended period of time. 

Officers and an ambulance remains on scene. This article will be updated with more information as it becomes available.
