Our Friday Night Highlights Week 3 Game of the Week will feature Santa Ynez hosting Santa Maria.
We begin our preview with the home team, Santa Ynez.
The Pirates rebounded from a tough opening week loss to Nipomo by dismantling Carpinteria, 42-0.
Now 1-1 on the season, Josh McClurg’s squad is hoping to build off that shutout victory when they face Santa Maria, a team they’ve had their way with the past three seasons.
The Saints may not be the same team they were two years ago, however, they’re still dynamic which is a cause for concern for the Pirates.
"It puts a lot of stress on your defense, deciding how you're going to defend that. They're able to throw the ball down field when they get the quarterback moving outside the pocket," McClurg said. "It's a tough team to defend, and they're going to be a tough team for us to block against. Their defense does a really nice job moving around, flying to the ball. They're scrappy."
"Their coach really coaches them up well. We know they swarm to the ball fast, so we just have to work on that," Santa Ynez senior wide receiver/defensive back Anthony Gills added. "We know they're quick and the quarterback is quick, so we have to focus on containing him and the other quick guys."
Santa Ynez and Santa Maria will kickoff Friday night at 7 P.M.
