Trailing 1-0, Baylor exploded for 14 runs in the middle innings en route to a 14-3 victory over Cal Poly in the rubber game of a three-game non-conference baseball series Sunday afternoon inside Baylor Ballpark.

In taking the series, two games to one, Baylor was held to four runs and nine hits in the first two games before erupting for 14 runs on 21 hits, including six doubles, a triple and three home runs, in the series finale.

Baylor, which won the series opener Friday 3-0, improved to 13-5 on the year while Cal Poly, a 3-1 winner Saturday, fell to 7-11.

Cal Poly led 1-0 in the second inning as Tate Samuelson led off with a single and eventually came home on an RBI single by Myles Emmerson.

The rest of the game belonged to Baylor as the Mustangs were held off the scoreboard until the ninth.

The Bears scored five runs in the third, three in the fourth and six in the sixth to turn the game around.

Baylor third baseman Davis Wendzel belted a three-run home run and a pair of singles, driving in a total of four runs, while designated hitter Andy Thomas doubled four times, one shy of the school and NCAA records, and singled once in a 5-for-5 day with one RBI.

Nick Loftin also had three hits, including a solo home run, and Davion Downey, Richard Cunningham and John Bissonette each had two hits for Baylor. Cole Haring also homered.

Cal Poly collected six hits, including two singles by Samuelson, who went 5-for-11 in the series. Catcher John Mackay doubled to drive in a run in the ninth and Cole Cabrera’s sacrifice fly scored Mackay with the final run of the game.

Cal Poly opens a 12-game home stand Friday night with the first of four games against Saint Mary’s. First pitch is at 6 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday and a 1 p.m. series finale Sunday.
