Mustang freshman shortstop Maddie Amos produced her first career home run Sunday morning, but a three-run first inning from Illinois helped the Fighting Illini to a 4-1 victory versus the Cal Poly softball program to close play at the CSUN/LMU Tournament.

After Cal Poly stranded the bases loaded with one down to close the top of the first inning, Illinois tallied its three-run effort capped by a two RBI double from pinch hitter Kailee Powell.

Held to one baserunner between the second and third innings, Cal Poly eventually broke through in the fourth as Amos swatted her homer over the right center field wall.

In the circle for Cal Poly, junior righthander Steffi Best retired nine of 10 Illinois batters between the second and fourth innings. The Fighting Illini, however, tallied their final run in the fifth following a Cal Poly throwing error.

Best, who struck out five, conceded just five hits.

Following a nine-day break, Cal Poly (6-21) completes Big West Conference preparations when visiting Seattle for a Tuesday, March 26 doubleheader and No. 5 Washington for a single game on Wednesday, March 27.
