Armani Garcia of Santa Ynez and Chris Cervantes of Santa Maria were named Athletes of the Week at the Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Round Table in Santa Maria.
Garcia is a pitcher for the Pirates’ softball team and struck out 17 batters in a 4-1 win over Santa Maria last Monday. Garcia also led the Santa Ynez to its first win over Lompoc since 2012.
“I’m really grateful, especially with all the support that I get and people pushing me to do my best,” Garcia said. “This season has been really fun, even though we’ve only had three games. It’s really fun, and I’m really grateful that I get to play with the team like the one that I have.”
Cervantes won both the 1600m and 3200m races at the Santa Maria City Meet last Wednesday. He followed up that performance with a pair of seconds in Carpenteria over the weekend.
“First race of the city meet, I didn’t expect to win,” Cervantes said. “I just wanted to give it all I had and saw where I went.”
