Cuesta College sophomore guard Josh Wilson-Murry and head coach Rusty Blair were awarded top men’s basketball honors for the Western State-North Conference over the weekend.
Wilson-Murry, who averaged 16.9 points and 7.6 rebounds per game during the regular season, was named MVP while Blair was named Coach of the Year.
As the Cougars’ captain, Wilson-Murry got the job done on both ends of the court. Offensively, he shot 42.9% from the field and 39.1% from beyond the arc. On defense, he averaged over two steals and almost one block per game.
Wilson-Murry led Cuesta to a 74-70 victory over rival Allan Hancock last Friday night to secure a share of the Western State-North Conference title with Ventura. Wilson dropped a game-high 27 points and went 7-of-10 from long distance.
“To me, after all I’ve been through personally, it’s extremely rewarding to be named Conference MVP. It’s definitely something that’s going to keep my drive going,” Wilson-Murry said.
“He’s our motivator, he’s the energy rabbit, not only that, he plays big, he scores, and he rebounds,” Blair explained. “He definitely deserves to be the Conference MVP.”
Four Cougars in-total earned All-Conference honors. Sophomore forward Iker Cruz and freshman guard Alexandre Fanchini joined Wilson-Murry on the First-Team while sophomore guard Jorge Bueno was named Honorable Mention.
“There’s probably a couple of other guys on the team that deserve the MVP as well, and I’m very fortunate to be named Conference MVP,” Wilson-Murry added. “It’s a team sport and we made it happen at the end of the season, for sure.”
Cuesta is the 19th seed in the upcoming Southern California Regional playoffs and will travel to 14th seed Pasadena on Wednesday night, tip-off is set for 7:00 P.M.
