Cabrillo’s Mary Rhodes and Matt Rodriguez of Righetti were named Northern Santa Barbara County Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week.
Rhodes led the Conquistadores to a 10-6 victory against Santa Ynez in girls water polo. She scored five goals on seven shots along with five steals.
“I’ve been working a lot on my shooting this year,” Rhodes explained. “It’s been a major issue with me in the past that I can’t make it. I can do everything else and get in the right position, but not be able to get it in the cage, but I’ve been working really hard with me and my coach.”
Rodriguez, the male athlete of the week, was honored for going 6-0 at the California Invitational Tournament at Morro Bay High School. The freshman wrestler won the 145-pound division. Rodriguez is 26-8 on the season and ranked 6th in the CIF-Central Section and 15th in the state.
“It was fun. It was fun being able to go out there and compete,” Rodriguez said. “I watched that tournament last year as an eighth grader and knew since then that I just wanted to compete and win that tournament. It was a big tournament and it felt good to win.”
