Cal Poly wrestling wins four bouts but falls to No. 24 Northwestern 32-16

Coach Jon Sioredas’ Mustangs (0-2) jumped to a 7-0 lead in the first two bouts and trailed 11-10 halfway through the matchup before surrendering numerous bonus points down the stretch.

Northwestern (3-2), which fell to Stanford 21-15 earlier in the evening, was visiting Mott Athletics Center for the third straight year and improved its record against Cal Poly in the all-time series to 4-0.

Wrestling in his first dual as a Mustang, redshirt freshman Willem DeBoer scored a quick takedown in the first period, added a takedown and escape in the second period and another takedown plus riding time in the final period for an 8-0 shutout over Branden Devine at 184 pounds, the opening bout.

DeBoer is 5-3 for the season.

Junior Tom Lane, an NCAA qualifier a year ago, improved to 5-4 this season with a 4-2 win over Zack Chakonis at 197. After a scoreless first period, Lane earned an escape but surrendered a takedown, trailing 2-1 entering the final period. A two-point near fall and riding time in the final period completed the 4-2 comeback victory.

Senior Yoshito Funakoshi scored a takedown with one second remaining to edge Colin Valdiviez at 133. Funakoshi, now 6-3 for the year, jumped to a 4-1 lead with two takedowns in the first period but was the victim of a four-point near fall in the second period, entering the final period trailing 5-4.

True freshman Nathan Tausch earned a dominating win over Braxton Cody in the final bout of the evening at 174. He lifted his record to 5-4 by scoring nine takedowns and a two-point near fall for a 20-7 lead before pinning Cody with 43 seconds remaining in the match.

Cal Poly will head to the Silver State for competition in the Reno Tournament of Champions on Thursday.
