Fields, Garrick with 17 points each as Green wins intrasquad game

Senior guards Donovan Fields and Marcellus Garrick both finished with 17 points, but Garrick’s Green squad topped the Gold side Saturday afternoon during the Cal Poly men’s basketball program’s annual intrasquad matchup inside Mott Athletics Center, 52-49.

Freshman forward Kyle Colvin added 11 points and freshman guard Jared Rice finished with 10 for the Green side, which led Gold at halftime, 36-35. During a matchup where neither side was able to establish a double-digit lead, freshman guard Junior Ballard posted 10 points and – alongside teammate and junior forward Nolan Taylor – posted a game-high seven rebounds for the Gold squad.

Three different players grabbed five rebounds for Green in Colvin, senior forward Kuba Niziol and junior forward Hank Hollingsworth.

Playing for the winning Green side, junior guard Job Alexander distributed a game-high four assists.

The afternoon was capped by the program’s annual dunk contest, which was captured by freshman forward Daxton Carr.

Cal Poly opens its 25th season of Division I action when hosting Menlo College on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. The Mustangs then visit Arizona on Sunday, Nov. 11 in a matchup televised nationally on Pac-12 Networks.
