Sean Goode netted his third goal of the season, and Brecc Evans added the first of his Cal Poly career Saturday night, lifting the Mustang men’s soccer team to a 2-0 win over Westmont in front of a crowd of 1,613 at Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

George Grote initiated the go-ahead sequence for Cal Poly in the 55th minute, tapping a ball ahead to Jose Rivera, who set up Goode running onto a connecting pass a few steps into the left side of the penalty area. Goode then beat Warrior keeper Lalo Delgado far-post with a shot into the back-right corner of the net.

Evans, a freshman via FC Dallas Academy by way of Culver City, Calif., doubled the Mustang advantage in the 86th minute.

Cal Poly won a free kick opportunity about 4 yards above the box, where Diego Alonso and Rivera assisted Evans for a left-footed strike beyond the reach of Westmont’s Andres Quiros.

The two-assist performance by Rivera, a senior midfielder out of San Juan Capistrano, was the Mustangs’ 27th multi-assist match since 1994, giving him a season total of three.

Cal Poly goalkeeper Simon Boehme made five saves for the game, including an all-out effort with just under a minute to play, when he deflected Lucky Puengrod’s attempt over the bar with an outstretched hand above, en route to his second shutout of the year. It was the sixth clean sheet over the previous two seasons for Boehm.

Also for Cal Poly, Luis Rodriguez placed a 14th-minute shot on goal, as did Alonso (32’) before intermission, but Delgado was in position to make saves on both occasions. Westmont (4-2-2) also sent back Nick Carroll in the 60th minute, before Jared Pressley also almost scored (64’), shooting high of the crossbar.

The Mustangs (3-4-1) will stay home in the week ahead, preparing to host UC Santa Barbara for the annual Blue-Green Rivalry Match in Spanos Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 30. Kickoff against the Gauchos is set for 7 p.m.
