KSBY’s Friday Night Highlights Week 2 Player of the Week goes to Lompoc’s Leondre Coleman, while late-game heroics from the St. Joseph Knights earned Play of the Week.
Coleman, a junior, is a converted wide receiver for the Braves and carried the load in a 36-10 victory over fellow Central Coast powerhouse Bishop Diego.
Coleman rushed 15 times for 141 yards and one touchdown. He used his receiving skills to tally another score in the 4th quarter. In all, he had two catches for 66 yards.
While battling through the adversity of losing his good friend last week, Coleman balled out. Lompoc head coach Andrew Jones took notice after Friday night’s win.
"Moving Leondre to running back and finally convincing him that that is what he’s got to do if we’re going to be successful, I thought he had a great game. Given the circumstances, he was pretty much best friends with the kid who passed away. I thought he played his heart out tonight."
Trailing 30-24 to Bakersfield Garces with under five seconds left in the 4th quarter, the St. Joseph Knights produced our Play of the Week. Quarterback Chase Artopoeus found Billy Collins in the back of the endzone to tie the game.
It all came down to senior kicker Nathan Halsell. Needing the extra point for the win, Halsell split the uprights to give St. Joseph a 31-30 victory. The Knights improved to 3-0 on the season.
