Cuesta baseball blanks No. 16 Moorpark, 7-0

Posted

Cuesta College rode the arm of freshman Johnny Wiltfang to a win over Western State Conference leader #16 Moorpark, 7-0.  Wiltfang authored a complete game four-hit shutout over the Raiders and was in complete control throughout the contest.

He struckout five batsmen, did not issue a walk, and did not allow a Raider to advance past second base.   The blanking of Moorpark marked only the second start of the year for Wiltfang, however the big right-hander also collected his team leading sixth winning decision of the year, which ties him for 10th in the State.

Moorpark Starter John Cashman matched Wiltfang zero-for-zero for the first three innings, but the Cougars tagged him for six hits and four runs in the 4th inning to open the game.  Shortstop Rueben Mercado and Designated Hitter Gabe Barthelmass did most of the damage for the Cougars on offense.  Mercado was 3-for-4, including a double, and drove in two runs, while scoring once.  Barthelmass was also 3-for-4 with a double and scored twice.

The Cougars are 16-13 on the season, but in 5th place in the WSC with a 5-6 record against the loop.  However, all six teams in the WSC circuit are within two games of the first place Raiders with nine games left to play.
