Orcutt Road was closed just outside the San Luis Obispo city limit on Wednesday after a pedestrian was struck and killed in a vehicle collision.

It happened at about 4:15 p.m. near La Lomita Way.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the female pedestrian was struck by a San Luis Obispo County Animal Services vehicle and died at the scene.

A CHP spokesperson said the pedestrian was walking southbound along the northbound shoulder of the roadway when she started to cross the street in the path of the vehicle.

The name of the young woman who was hit has not yet been released, but an officer said she lives in the nearby area.

The County released the following statement to KSBY: "We are deeply saddened to hear about the tragic accident this afternoon.  The County is cooperating with the CHP, which is leading the traffic investigation. The County will be reviewing investigation findings and other information to better understand what transpired. Our condolences go out to the victim’s loved ones."
