TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Wednesday marks one year since the murder of journalist and Indiana State University alum Jamal Khashoggi.

Khashoggi was killed while visiting the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

In the journalist's honor, ISU is holding a candlelight vigil Wednesday in recognition of his courage and journalism advocacy.

It is believed that the Saudi government had ordered the Washington Post journalist's death for being openly critical of the country's crown prince.

On Oct. 2, 2018, Khashoggi was visiting the Saudi embassy in Turkey to obtain marriage documents when he was assassinated.

Khashoggi graduated from ISU in 1983, where he received a degree in business administration.

The ISU alum was honored by Time magazine in 2018 as "Person of the Year," along with other journalists.

Indiana State will be awarding Khashoggi a posthumous Distinguished Alumni Award on Friday, Oct. 11.

The Royal Embassy in Washington, D.C., will also be hosting a candlelight vigil for Khashoggi on Wednesday.
