UPDATE : An unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile launches during an operational test at 1:35 a.m. from Vandenberg Space Force Base.

An operational test launch of an Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) is scheduled take off from Vandenberg Space Force Base on Tuesday between 11:01 p.m. and 5:01 a.m.

According to AFGSC, the purpose of the ICBM test launch program is to validate and verify the effectiveness, readiness and accuracy of the weapon system.

Officials say Tuesday's routine test was scheduled years in advance.
