The United States-German Student Exchange Program is celebrating 70 years and on Thursday, the Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo de Tolosa invited members of the Consulate of the Federal Republic of Germany to celebrate.

The club's partnership with Germany is the longest continuous exchange in the country.

It started as a pen pal program but over the past seven decades, more than 140 host families in the county and in Stuttgart, Germany have opened their homes to students.

Each year, at least one student participates in the exchange program.

"So ties between our countries are long, through lots of families that have integrated through Germany over the years but when an international understanding becomes personal, we are all citizen diplomats and we all benefit from that," said Amy Kardel, Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo de Tolosa's Director of International Service.

Currently, the Rotary Club is hosting Eve Konig who is going to San Luis Obispo High School, while Lukas Von Bischopnick attends school in Germany.
