Santa Maria police arrested a man for allegedly bringing a loaded handgun on school grounds Tuesday, according to a law enforcement official.
Jacob Aceves, 18, ran from responding officers shortly before 5 p.m. and onto the Santa Maria High School campus.
"At the time, there were several students on campus attending various after-school activities," Lt. Terry Flaa wrote in a press release.
Police set up a perimeter and found Aceves trying to escape the south end of campus. He was arrested.
A school employee showed where Aceves had discarded a loaded handgun next to a classroom.
Aceves also matched a description for an attempted robbery an hour earlier.
Police said Aceves approached a male juvenile, physically restrained him while demanding money. The victim was able to break free from Aceves’ hold and run for help, according to the press release.
Aceves was booked in the Santa Barbara County Jail for attempted robbery and various weapons violations, including possession of a loaded firearm on school campus. Bail was set at $50,000.00.
