The San Luis Obispo Police Department will focus their efforts on distracted drivers on Friday, July 17.

Officers will be out searching for drivers talking, texting, using an app or any other action on their phone that is not hands-free and violates California’s cell phone law.

When it comes to distracted driving, cell phones are considered the top distraction. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 3,450 people were killed in 2016 because of distracted drivers.

If you have an important phone call or need to access your phone for any reason, SLOPD encourages you to pull over to a safe parking place to do so.

You can receive a $162 fine for the first offense and at least a $285 fine for a second offense.
