A local first responder agency is celebrating a major milestone. San Luis Ambulance is marking 75 years of service this month.

The private ambulance company was started in 1945, servicing the majority of San Luis Obispo County and into Southern Monterey County.

The Kelton family bought it in 1976 and it's been family-owned and operated ever since.

Because a big anniversary party isn't possible due to COVID-19, San Luis Ambulance employees decided to roll up their sleeves and have a company-wide blood drive Friday instead.

It's their way to celebrate 75 years of serving the community while giving back to their patients.

“We all live and work here so not only are we serving our community but we're also taking care of our family members and friends and our loved ones so we not only want to do a good job for the community but for our family and everyone,” said Justin Kelton, San Luis Ambulance vice president.

San Luis Ambulance employs 151 people and continues to grow.

Six reserve EMT's and a paramedic were just hired.

The company hires several times a year and says there is consistent demand for healthcare workers, especially during the pandemic.
