UPDATE: The City of Santa Maria says the council Tuesday night approved the zoning code amendment.
Tonight the #SantaMaria City Council approved a zoning code amendment that allows for expanded retail use in the former Costco building. This maintains the possibility for light industrial use, while providing flexibility that would also allow for a full range of retail uses.

ORIGINAL STORY: The City of Santa Maria is moving forward with a proposed zoning change for the old Costco Building.
Located on the 1300 block of South Bradley Road, the building has been vacant since 2017 when Costco moved to a new location down the street.
The zoning would move from industrial for wholesale purpose to expanded services and retail, allowing for a variety of new businesses.
The item will be up for discussion again at Tuesday night's City Council meeting.
"Given that is was unanimous to move forward last time, this would be the second of two readings. If passed, it would become effective in thirty days," said Mark van de Kamp with the City of Santa Maria.
He says the zoning change could help the economy.
