(10:44 a.m.) - The California Highway Patrol is investigating a crash that killed one person Tuesday morning.

It happened at about 9:40 a.m. near the intersection of Monte Rd. and Avila Beach Dr.

The CHP says the driver of a gray Jeep Cherokee was northbound on Highway 101 in the fast lane, going about 70-75 mph, when witnesses say the driver abruptly crossed both lanes, exiting the highway over a steep embankment. The Jeep crossed over the Avila Beach Dr. offramp and struck a tree.

Officers say it appears the driver, a man believed to be in his 40s, was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

He was the only person in the vehicle.

The Avila Beach Dr. offramp was closed for emergency personnel.

This is a developing story and will be updated with new information as it becomes available.
