The deadline to help name a new Santa Maria elementary school is nearing.

The Santa Maria-Bonita School District is asking for the public's help in naming the school, which is expected to open in August near Costco.

Suitable options must hold historical or cultural significance and people are asked to provide information on why the name would be appropriate and should be chosen.

"A committee (of volunteers) will look at the names and find the ones that are the most appropriate for the new school, that fit the character of our community, that fit our school district and then give three final suggestions to the board of education to choose from,” said district spokesperson Maggie White.

As of Monday, more than 200 ideas had been submitted.

The deadline to submit possible names is Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 4 p.m.

The form can be found here.

Paper copies of the forms can also be picked up at the front desk of the district office at 708 South Miller St.
