UPDATE (11:42 p.m.) - California Highway Patrol said one person is dead following the crash on southbound Highway 101 in Paso Robles this evening.
CHP said the crash happened when a driver tried to change lanes and rear-ended another vehicle, leading to a stack of four vehicles in total.
According to CHP, the first driver hit sustained fatal injuries as a result of the direct impact. Their name is not being released at this time.
There has been a detour established for the closure using Vine Street to SR-46 west, where traffic was able to reenter the freeway, according to CHP.

ORIGINAL STORY: A multi-vehicle crash blocked the southbound lanes of Highway 101 in Paso Robles on Monday evening.
The crash happened shortly before 7 p.m. just south of the Spring St. on-ramp.

The extent of injuries is unknown at this time.
However, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office has confirmed a detective from the coroner's office was requested at the scene.
