A Morro Bay man was arrested Friday night on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

The incident reportedly happened just after 10 p.m. in the 1100 block of the Embarcadero.

Police say the victim was disposing of trash in a dumpster while the suspect, identified as Kevin Lee Hicks, 49, was digging through another trash receptacle.

Police say the two men got into an argument and as the victim walked away, Hicks followed the man and hit him on the side of the head with a metal sign he had pulled out of the trash.

Hicks reportedly fled the scene but was arrested in the area shortly after. He was booked into San Luis Obispo County Jail on charges including assault with a deadly weapon, mayhem, possession of a controlled substance, and being under the influence of a controlled substance. As of Tuesday morning, he was still in custody with bail set at $100,000.

Police say the victim suffered a severe cut to his ear.

Investigators are asking anyone with additional information about this incident to call the Morro Bay Police Department at (805) 772-6225 or Crime Stoppers at (805) 549-STOP.
