UPDATE (3:09 p.m.): The CHP released more information about the fatal crash along Highway 101 near Los Alamos Wednesday.

Officers said a 33-year-old male driver and a 22-year-old male passenger from Oxnard were traveling in a Chevrolet Express van on the northbound lanes of Highway 101.

For unknown reasons, the driver drove into the center median where the van hit an Oak tree branch, according to the CHP. Officers determined that the impact caused the driver to hit his head on the driver's side A-pillar and die.

The van continued to cross the southbound lanes where it hit a fence and came to a stop.

Officers said the passenger was able to get out of the car on his own and was later transported to Marion Regional Medical Center with head injuries.

CHP officers have not released the names of the driver or the passenger.

The crash is still under investigation but officers said alcohol and/or drugs is not suspected.
