A death involving “suspicious circumstances” is under investigation in Morro Bay after police say a body was found in the road early Monday morning.

Morro Bay police were called to the area of Harbor Street and Piney Way shortly before 3 a.m. to reports of a man in the middle of the road near the Morro Bay Fire Department.

Once on scene, officers determined the 35-year-old man was dead.

"This is very out of character so-to-speak for Morro Bay," said David Shoemaker who has lived in the quiet seaside city for 2 decades. "Surprised. Not something that normally happens in Morro Bay."

Heidi Sommers moved to the area just a couple of months ago.

"It's shocking," Sommers said. "Probably around 3 o'clock or so, I did notice there were some lights shining through my bedroom window and I thought it was a little odd."

Police are calling the death suspicious.

"This particular individual being in the middle of the roadway, it requires a little bit more investigating on our end to determine if it was substance related or if it was at the hands of another," said Commander Amy Watkins of the Morro Bay Police Department.

Police do not believe he was a local adding that officers made contact with him within the last few weeks.

"He is possibly transient but that's something we're also trying to determine is: Why was he in Morro Bay? What was he doing here? And, what led up to his death?" Commander Watkins explained.

He has been identified but police are not releasing his name until family is notified.

The investigation is ongoing and police ask anyone with information to contact Detective Marvos at (805) 772-6225 or San Luis Obispo County Crime Stoppers at (805) 549-STOP.
