Governor Gavin Newsom has issued an emergency proclamation for San Luis Obispo and Monterey counties due to this week's winter storms.

The wet and windy weather caused flooding, mud and debris flows, power outages, and downed trees. Much of the severe damage was seen in Monterey County, where thousands of residents were forced to evacuate and a portion of Highway 1 was washed out.

The emergency proclamation directs Caltrans to formally request immediate assistance through the Federal Highway Administration's Emergency Relief Program and the Office of Emergency Services to provide assistance to local governments.
