The Federal Bureau of Prisons announced Friday that an inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Lompoc died earlier this week after previously testing positive for COVID-19.
Prison officials say Christopher Carey, who had long-term, pre-existing medical conditions, tested positive for the virus on May 4. He was considered recovered on May 20 after officials say he completed isolation and had no symptoms.
In August, prison officials say Carey was taken to a local hospital due to progressive paralysis. He reportedly died at the hospital on Tuesday, Dec. 15.
Carey, 72, had been in custody at the federal prison in Lompoc since February 2016, serving a 135-month sentence for possession of child pornography.
