A 19-year-old from Santa Maria was arrested on suspicion of DUI following a crash Monday afternoon west of Santa Maria.

Emergency crews were called to the scene of the two-vehicle crash on Betteravia Road at Brown Road at around 2:38 p.m.

The California Highway Patrol says Fidel Lopez, 19, was heading northbound on Betteravia and attempted to turn onto Brown Road, directly in front of an oncoming vehicle.

The crash trapped the driver of the other vehicle, identified as a 23-year-old from Guadalupe.

CHP says Lopez then tried to turn around and drive away, but damage to his vehicle prevented him from getting more than 100 yards away from the crash site.

He was determined to be under the influence of alcohol and was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and hit-and-run, CHP said in a press release.

Investigators say he was not injured.

The other driver reportedly sustained fractured femurs and was flown to a nearby hospital.
