A death investigation is underway after a man’s body was discovered at a San Luis Obispo homeless encampment.
San Luis Obispo police say members of the department’s Community Action Team (CAT) and Special Enforcement Team (SET) went to an area along the Bob Jones Train between Prado Road and Los Osos Valley Road where they say 20 encampments were discovered at around 11 a.m. Thursday.
While several were unoccupied, police say a “range of services and programs” were offered to about 10 people there.
Police say members also tried contacting someone in a tent near the trailhead at LOVR, but noticed immediately the person inside had been deceased for likely several weeks.
Police say nothing suspicious was discovered and several people in the area reported the man had ongoing health issues.
A San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s Coroner investigator took over the investigation.
A cause of death will be determined during an autopsy scheduled for next week.
The name of the man, who is said to be in his 60s, will be released once his family is notified.
The investigation is ongoing and police ask anyone who may have information that can help to contact them at (805) 781-7312 or Crime Stoppers at (805) 549-STOP.
