Community celebrates Dia de los Muertos in San Luis Obispo

Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa was decorated in vibrant colors and pictures of family and friends who have passed away.

It was part of the sixth annual Dia de Los Muertos celebration at the San Luis Obispo Mission Plaza.

Community members celebrated the Mexican holiday which honors deceased loved ones and celebrates their lives.

The event featured folkloric dancing, mariachi music, costume contests and sugar skull decorating.

There were decorated altars at the event featuring photos of friends and family members who have died.

"My great-grandma who I added to the altar has always done it since I was a child, and so I decided to partake in this day also, so it's just something that's always been around my family," said Corina Guzman, an attendee.

Wilshire Hospice collaborates with the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art, the Latino Outreach Council and Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa to host the celebration each year.
