A Cal Poly freshman has died, the university announced Wednesday.

In an email sent out to students and staff, Cal Poly says first-year business student Luke Fradin passed away earlier this week in the Los Angeles area.

Cal Poly says Fradin, of Hidden Hills, because sick in mid-March and was tested for COVID-19 at the time, but the results came back negative.

The cause of his death remains under investigation.

"Luke's sudden and tragic passing is devastating news to share. The university remains in contact with Luke's family to offer our support, and our thoughts are with them and Luke's friends during this difficult time," the announcement stated.

Cal Poly says virtual counseling is available to students 24/7 at (805) 756-2511.
