If you're looking for a place to take your date on Valentine's Day, a new beer garden-style restaurant is opening just in time in downtown Paso Robles.
"The Backyard on Thirteenth" is an open-air beer, wine and dining venue located on the corner of 13th Street and Railroad Street, just two blocks from City Park. It's the site of the former Chubby Chandlers Pizza.
The doors officially open at 4 p.m. on Friday, February 14.
New owners Amy and Russell Baker grew up in Paso Robles and say they were inspired by beer gardens around the world and wanted to open a similar space in their hometown.
“Downtown Paso Robles is going through a renaissance right now, with a lot of old neglected buildings and properties being developed into some amazing spaces,” Russell Baker said. “We’re so excited to be a part of this exciting time in our town’s growth.”
The Backyard will offer Central Coast craft brews and locally-produced wine along with seasonal food and live music. The owners have committed to serving local craft brews on at least half of the 24 taps. Four taps will feature Paso Robles wines. An additional selection of beer, wine and cider will also be available in bottles and cans. Non-alcoholic beverages, including an assortment of sparkling water, sodas and juices, will be available for purchase.
The space has room for up to 225 guests and has heater lamps and two fireplaces for the winter and retractable shades and misters for warmer weather.
The building is reportedly sustainable as well. Three re-purposed shipping containers provide spaces for an indoor lounge and a rail bar overlooking Thirteenth Street. There is also an enclosed family area with games for children.
The Backyard has partnered with Roots on Railroad to provide a full menu of “gourmet street fare” food options which will be open for lunch and dinner. They will be offering items such as Smash Burgers, Lobster Rolls and Lobster Mac & Cheese.
