Students in Santa Maria are taking a break from summer vacation to learn about careers in science, technology, engineering, and math.

This is the third year STEM Industry Days has been held in northern Santa Barbara County.

Over two days, 5th through 8th graders have a chance to participate in workshops about energy, environmental science, biotechnology, meteorology, 3D design, business math, building engineering, food safety science, and other topics.

Educators say the goal is to show students the practical applications of STEM education and training and allow kids to meet people who work in those professions.

On Friday, the students will get a tour of some local businesses.
