The California Department of Motor Vehicles will close its offices half-day on Wednesday, July 24, for statewide training exercises.
The Operation Excellence: DMV Training is designated to prepare DMV employees for REAL ID processing and reinforcing the basics of customer service to provide the best support to drivers.
The training will put more than 5,000 frontline staff at more than 180 facilities across California to teach employees how to utilize the new tools to create REAL ID licenses and identification cards.
The trainings are expected to be held in the morning and DMV offices are scheduled to reopen at 1 p.m.
DMV offices across the state have already experienced an influx in REAL ID license requests, which must be done in person rather than online or through the mail.
Starting on October 1, 2020, travelers must take a REAL ID license or identification card in order to fly within the U.S., unless passengers bring another form of a federal document to prove their identity like a U.S. passport or passport card. REAL ID licenses will also be used in order to enter government-operated facilities such as military bases.
Operation Excellence is an initiative supported by the DMV Reinvention Strike Team, created by Governor Gavin Newsom in January. The Strike Team was founded in order to reduce wait times, emphasize transparency at DMV offices and overall customer satisfaction.
