A decade after seeing a need for fair trade shopping in San Luis Obispo, HumanKind is celebrating 10 years of inspiring change.

The 10-year celebration featured cake from the Madonna Inn, discounts and prizes.

The shop on Monterey Street in downtown SLO features clothing, home goods and jewelry made from artisans around the world.

They’ve sold more than $2.8 million in fair trade goods over the past decade.

“Every item here is made by artisans or farmers in the developing world who are paid a living wage and have good working conditions and that’s really important to us,” said owner Elizabeth Aebischer.

The two women who founded HumanKind say they barely kept the doors open when they first started but now — they’re able to give back to the San Luis Obispo community.

As a non-profit, HumanKind has donated $25,000 back to the San Luis Obispo community since they opened.
