Police took a man into custody Thursday morning moments after officers say he tried to rob a Santa Maria bank.
Santa Maria police say officers responded to Chase Bank on the 2200 block of S. Broadway at about 11:44 a.m. to reports of a robbery in progress.
Officers say the suspect, identified as Juan Angel Salinas Pena, went into the bank and told a teller he had a gun and demanded money.
When officers arrived on scene, they say the 25-year-old tried to run off but was taken into custody in the parking lot.
Pena had not been given any money, police say, adding that a gun was not located on the suspect.
He was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail for a parole violation and attempted bank robbery, according to police.
