A man from Los Osos admitted to taking the San Luis Obispo Police Chief’s personal firearm.

San Luis Obispo Police Chief Deanna Cantrell self-reported that someone took her gun after she left it in the bathroom at El Pollo Loco on Wednesday.

The San Luis Obispo Police Department said in a statement Thursday evening that a man called the Sheriff’s Office and told deputies his brother-in-law was in possession of the stolen firearm.

The caller said he would bring in the suspect to the Sheriff’s Coastal Division in Los Osos to return the gun.

Investigators interviewed the suspect identified as 30-year-old Skeeter Carlos Mangan of Los Osos.

During the interview, Mangan admitted to finding the gun in the restroom, putting it in his pocket and bringing it to his home in Los Osos.

SLOPD wants to thank the community for their help in locating the firearm and sharing the information on social media.
