A longtime favorite movie rental store in Atascadero is opening its doors in a new location.

John’s Video Palace has been a staple in the community for more than three decades before changing its storefront from its original location on El Camino Real to its new one, which will be next to the Bloom N’ Grow.

Part of the reason for the moving is because the rent in the old location continued to rise and another business owner in the area offered the business a better price for a different space.

Members of the Atascadero community pitched in to keep the rental store alive by offering a new place to set up shop. The owner of John’s Video Palace, John Taft, is thankful that the community stepped up to offer assistance during the transition.

“It’s definitely the community has really supported…I mean, it’s a video store. Who would think video stores are gone? Small towns, that’s their entertainment. Families come in and pick a movie and it’s really old-fashioned, I guess you might say. But it’s still around,” said Taft.

The video rental store is expected to stay open for at least another year.

John’s Video Palace will host its grand opening in the new location on Friday, July 5, at 10 a.m.

Its Paso Robles location, which can be found at 124 Niblick Road, will also be open for another year.
