The Santa Barbara Police Department is teaming up with the Coalition Against Gun Violence to reduce the number of unwanted guns in the county.

They are putting on an anonymous gun buyback event at the Earl Warren Showgrounds on Saturday, June 15, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

All unwanted handguns, shotguns and rifles can be exchanged for gift cards worth $80 from several retailers. Gift cards worth $160 will be given to those who turn in California-classified assault weapons.

Ammunition will also be accepted at the event, but gift cards or money will not be given in exchange.

Free gun locks will be handed out to those who want to increase safety around their guns.

Organizers will not be accepting any explosives or military equipment.

Police say the purpose of the buyback is to lessen the risk of suicide, homicide and other gun violence in the community.
