Santa Maria firefighters took to the links Monday for the second annual Fire on the Fairways fundraiser.

Community members, alongside the local fire department, played a round of golf at the Santa Maria Country Club to benefit the Santa Maria Firefighters Benevolent Foundation to support local non-profits and families in need.

The money raised in the tournament will also help local firefighters and their families, as well as retired firefighters and other first responders.

“Sometimes the resources that are available for us to help us don’t always come through or take too long,” said Jay Wilkins, Santa Maria Firefighters Benevolent Foundation. “We have the ability to write a check, cut a check that day and without these funds, without the players coming in and playing, we don’t have those funds.”

Organizers hope to raise more than $40,000 from the fundraiser.

The Santa Maria Firefighters Benevolent Foundation was started five years ago and has already raised more than $60,000 for local organizations.
