A Paso Robles gamer is headed to the big leagues.

Master Fortnite gamer River Handley is taking his talents to the top of the gaming world when he competes with Team Liquid at the Fortnite World Cup hosted by Epic Games.

Handley is a professional gamer for Team Liquid and is one of the best gamers on the West Coast.

River Handley is headed to the Fortnite World Cup in New York City.

He started playing Fortnite about a year ago and said he loved the game from the start.

“Fortnite was just unique,” Handley said. “I didn’t play a lot of video games before, and I got it, and I don’t know, it’s something I got really passionate about and I just started playing it a bunch and yeah playing it for millions now, it’s crazy.”

And he does play a lot, Handley said he plays about six hours a day.

“The only way, I feel, to become good at anything is to just play it a lot,” Handley said. “I’ve played over a year now and gave up a lot of things, but it’s paying off.”

Right now his focus is Fortnite but he knows the game might not last forever, but he said the e-sports community has given him a lot of connections and is preparing him for his future career.

“There’s a lot of stuff you can work in e-sports, there are other games, say Fortnite doesn’t continue,” Handley said. “I know a lot of people thankfully, so if I wanted to continue and get a job in e-sports, that would be really cool. That could be a possibility for me.”

Handley has qualified for the solo and duo competition at the Fortnite World Cup, and just for qualifying he got paid $50,000 and is getting flown out to New York for the competition.

Handley has the potential to win the grand prize of $3 million if he is crowned the champion of the Fortnite World Cup.

If he wins, he said he is going to save up the money.

The Fortnite World Cup is July 26 to July 28 in New York City.
