The Integrated Waste Management Authority (IWMA) is in the process of drafting an ordinance that would ban Styrofoam throughout San Luis Obispo County.

The IWMA said Styrofoam is extremely problematic because it can’t be recycled locally and because the material breaks up easily it can quickly make its way into the environment.

The organization is expected to discuss the issue at theSan Luis Obispo County Board of Directors meeting on July 10.

A ban on the material is already in place in the City of San Luis Obispo and several other cities in San Luis Obispo County.

Santa Barbara County passed an ordinance in July, 2018 that bans the use of Styrofoam cups and food containers. That ban went into effect on Jan. 1 2019.
