Cal Poly San Luis Obispo has filed an intent to appeal with the NCAA over sanctions the organization placed on the university for misusing book stipends.
In April, the NCAA found that Cal Poly gave 265 student-athletes an $800 book stipend that, for 72 of those students, was more than the actual cost of the books. According to a report from the NCAA, some of those student-athletes used the leftover money to pay for unrelated items such as food, rent, utilities, and car repairs.
The university says it self-reported the mistake to the NCAA in August of 2017 after realizing they overpaid some student-athletes for their textbooks.
While the NCAA said it did not believe the violation was intentional, Cal Poly Athletics was penalized with two years of probation, a $5,000 fine, and a vacation of records.
The intent to appeal gives the university 30 days to actually file an appeal. A Cal Poly spokesperson says the university is still reviewing its option on how it will proceed.
