Just how many records will be broken when the weekend is over is unclear, but the new movie “Avengers Endgame” is likely to hold many of them.
Saturday morning, industry estimates put the opening day total at a stunning $158 million. The Friday total includes an estimated record breaking $60 million from Thursday night previews.
The Disney Marvel movie has the widest release in box office history with 4,662 screens. If you were in one of those seats, the record breaking numbers should come as no surprise, as many theaters were packed with moviegoers and often sold out.
The previous record for an opening day movie was set by another blockbuster franchise. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” made $119.1 million in 2015.
“Endgame” opening day was 32% higher than “The Force Awakens” on opening day.
In comparison, “Captain Marvel” made $153 million in its entire weekend debut last month.
On Friday, Disney announced “Endgame” was the fastest film ever to gross $100 million domestically in just 17 hours of screenings. The previous record was set by “Avengers: Infinity War” last year at 21 hours, according to The Wrap.
So where is the finish line? Estimates put the amount at a staggering $350 million. The record is currently $314 million for a three day opening weekend held by “Avengers: Infinity War.”
