UPDATE (4:35 p.m.) – A man believed to be from Northern California was killed in a crash at the Oceano Dunes Friday, just one week after another deadly crash in the same area.

Kevin Pearce, acting state parks superintendent for the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area, says a group of about five friends were each on ATVs in the Vent Pipe area Friday afternoon when, for unknown reasons, the front rider put his foot on the brake, launching him off his ATV and down a 25- to 35-foot dune.

The man’s ATV then kept going down the hill, crushing him, according Pearce.

Rangers responded and provided CPR for about 20 minutes, but were not successful in reviving the rider, according to Pearce.

No one else was injured.

The man is said to be approximately 35-year-old and from the Sacramento area.

The crash happened in the same general area as a deadly crash last Friday night, but was closer to the ocean, according to Pearce.

Pearce says this is typically a busy time of year at the Oceano Dunes.
